Who will you hear from?
Dr Shanti Balasubramaniam is a Metabolic Geneticist at Kids Research, the research branch of Sydney Children’s Hospitals Network. Dr Balasubramaniam works across multiple Australian states, supporting children with mito and their families, and has worked extensively with Mito Foundation.
Dr Balasubramaniam will speak about genetic tests for children. She will delve into the various pathways available to families and provide valuable insights into the process. She will also explore potential barriers and the benefits of a confirmed genetic diagnosis.
Shelley Beverley is a Psychologist, an active mito community member on our Mito Community Advisory Panel (MCAP), and hosts many of our Wellbeing Mito Connect Calls. Shelley understands the impact of mito and the importance of wellbeing for all family members.
Shelley will speak about the emotional challenges experienced at diagnosis and the signs to look for further support, along with some ways to manage emotional responses.
Rachel Havrlant, a Manager at the Transition Care Network (part of the Agency for Clinical Innovation), will speak about the transition from paediatric care to adult care.
Rachel will cover the basics of transitioning to adult care. She will offer advice to help families/carers to prepare and support children throughout this transitional phase.
