Get to know your hosts:
Shelley grew up in South Africa, but in 2010, she moved to Tasmania. On the other hand, Matthew lives in Melbourne, Victoria. Both Shelley and Matthew have been active members of the mito community for a long time.
Shelley’s family has a strong history of mito, which led to her being diagnosed with MELAS. She experiences ongoing symptoms like trouble hearing, high blood pressure, diabetes, and muscle fatigue. Shelley’s main focus is raising awareness about mito to make changes in the law for the community.
Matthew got his MELAS diagnosis after spending a long time in the hospital. He deals with ongoing symptoms such as high blood pressure, diabetes, hearing loss, and constant pain. Matthew takes part in medical trials to advance research and raise awareness about mito.
Shelley believes that hosting meet-ups provides her with a safe space to share stories and resources. This makes others feel supported when they need guidance. Matthew believes his role is to create a supportive and motivating environment where everyone can learn from one another. Together, they work towards creating a positive atmosphere where everyone can enjoy the meet-up.
