About the event

Join us for a Mito Social event at Roma Street Parklands

Join Kim Harrison and your local mito community at a Mito Social in Brisbane. We’ll be celebrating World Mitochondrial Disease Week. Kim will host the event. She is a valued member of the mito community and co-chair of the Mito Community Advisory Panel.

This event is a wonderful opportunity for the local mito community to come together and connect in person. As the sun sets, we’ll watch landmarks like the Museum of Brisbane and Suncorp Stadium light up in green as part of Light Up Mito. Light Up for Mito is a global campaign where landmarks light up in green to raise awareness of mito. This year it will take place Saturday 21 September.

While wearing or shining green is optional, it’s recommended! This event isn’t just about raising awareness. It’s about creating a sense of belonging and support for those impacted by mito. It’s also a chance to make new friends, share experiences, and feel the strength of the community.

This event will also incorporate a Munch for Mito.

Everyone is welcome, we encourage you to bring your family and friends! Join us for a memorable day of connection, support, and laughter.

Kim Harrison

After many years of seeing various doctors and specialists, Kim was diagnosed with mitochondrial myopathy (adPEO with multiple mtDNA deletions) late in 2018. She had been working full time as a Business Manager at a local College on the Sunshine Coast for many years. In 2021, Kim was sad to leave this position due to a decline in her condition.

The year after her diagnosis, Kim showed her support for the mito community by completing 3 Bloody Long Walks back-to-back. Kim continues raising funds and awareness with her family by taking part in subsequent Bloody Long Walks, Virtual Bloody Long Walks, and Stay In Bed Days. Kim loves getting outside and spending as much time with her family and friends as possible.
