Federal Budget 17
How Does The Federal Budget Impact The Mito Community?
The Mito Foundation welcomes the Federal Government’s commitment to the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS), Medicare and the Medical Research Future Fund (MRFF), shown in the 2017/2018 Budget.
The government has ensured the NDIS will receive full, sustainable funding by increasing the Medicare levy from 2% to 2.5%. A national NDIS Quality and Safeguards Commission will be established to ensure service providers deliver quality support and NDIS participants have choice and control over their funding and services. Further information about the NDIS is available here.
The Medicare Guarantee Fund will be established from July 2017 to ensure Australians continue to have access to health services through the Medicare Benefits Schedule (MBS), and affordable medicines through the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme (PBS). The government will also lift the freeze on the indexation of the MBS, reducing pressure on GPs and other health professionals to increase out-of-pocket fees for patients and encourage bulk-billing of vulnerable individuals.
The MRFF will see over $65 million invested into a range of health and medical research programmes. The Mito Foundation is a proud supporter of the MRFF action group and looks forward to announcements on how this funding will be spent. Further information about the MRFF is available here. You can read more about the first grants here.
Additionally, the government has committed to fund the following programmes which may benefit some members of the mito community:
- Primary Health Networks locally tailored after-hours health services
- In home palliative care services through the Primary Health Care Networks
- Continuation and expansion of the My Health Record System to allow individuals to control and track their medical care
The Mito Foundation will continue to monitor Australia’s health and disability services in the new financial year.
