What is horizon scanning?

Horizon scanning is a tool that helps identify health innovations as they move through research and development. These can include new diagnostic tools, medicines and other treatments.

For Mito Foundation, horizon scanning helps us understand what is being developed, what may become available in the future, and what it could mean for people impacted by mitochondrial disease. It also helps guide our advocacy, research priorities and work to improve access to emerging therapies and clinical trials.

We work with researchers, clinicians and mitochondrial disease organisations around the world to share knowledge and track progress.

Global therapy review

We partnered with international collaborators to review all mitochondrial disease clinical trials and therapy approvals between 2000 and 2025.

The findings were presented at EuroMit 2026 and UMDF's Mitochondrial Medicine Conference 2026.

Australian therapy landscape (2023)

We completed our own horizon scan to understand therapies in development for mitochondrial disease and how many were accessible in Australia. This work led us to develop our action plan to increase clinical trials for mito in Australia.

Australian horizon scanning project

We contributed to a national project exploring the role of patient organisations in horizon scanning. This work is helping shape the approach to re-establish horizon scanning in Australia.
