A consultation paper has been released outlining the government’s proposed two stage approach to introducing mitochondrial donation into Australia. The consultation paper describes measures aligned with those implemented in the UK and does indicate that all impacted families who are ready to start a family would have access to mitochondrial donation in Stage 1.
Members of the public are invited to submit their views on the proposed approach. Please take this opportunity to have your say before Monday 15 March. Every submission from the mito community will help to reinforce the urgency for legislative change.

Draft legislation is expected to be released after the consultation period and the bill is expected in Parliament in June when MPs and Senators will be allowed a conscience vote.
