You may have read in the mitoHOPE Program newsletter that the estimated timeline to begin its clinical trial as part of Australia's mitochondrial donation pilot program has been revised. We know this news will be disappointing for many people and families impacted by mitochondrial disease.

Based on revised estimates, Australian families may be able to start the process of mitochondrial donation towards the end of 2027, 12 months later than previously anticipated.

For those waiting and hoping to access mitochondrial donation, we acknowledge this delay is not just a change in timing. It may affect deeply personal decisions about starting or growing a family. For some, it comes after years of advocacy alongside Mito Foundation to change legislation and make mitochondrial donation possible in Australia. We recognise the uncertainty this delay may cause and want the community to know we share in your frustration and disappointment.

Mito Foundation has raised with the mitoHOPE Program the importance of providing clear, and timely information when changes like this occur. To help amplify communication of this revised timeline, we are contacting the families that we know are waiting so they have accurate information and access to support while they consider their next steps.

If this delay affects you

You do not have to navigate this alone. Support is available. You may wish to:

Information for clinicians

If you are caring for a family who may be eligible for mitochondrial donation, we encourage you to:

  • Contact patients who may be affected by this delay.
  • Help them understand what this may mean for their reproductive planning.
  • Direct them to the mitoHOPE Program website. Encourage them to opt in to receive future updates and newsletters.
  • Refer them to Mito Foundation for additional support or information.

Continuing to advocate

Mito Foundation remains committed to the safe and responsible introduction of mitochondrial donation in Australia.

We continue to have confidence in the expertise and dedication of the mitoHOPE Program team. As a program partner, we are aware of encouraging results in the lab and the generosity of women who have donated their frozen eggs to support this work.

This delay highlights the challenges of navigating Australia’s new and complex mitochondrial donation regulations. While strong regulation is essential, we believe there are opportunities to speed up processes without compromising safety. We will write formally to the Government to voice these recommendations.

Our commitment

While this delay is disappointing, it doesn’t change the long-term goal. Mito Foundation remains committed to advocate for, inform and provide support to the mito community throughout this journey.
