The Australian Government has introduced new laws that may change the National Disability Insurance Scheme, or NDIS.
Many people in the mito community are watching these changes closely.
For some people, the NDIS helps with daily life. It can help people access:
- therapy
- equipment
- support at home
- transport
- help to take part in the community
- other disability supports.
These supports can help people stay safer, more independent and more connected.
We also know that change can feel stressful, especially when people are unsure what it may mean for them.
Mito Foundation is working with disability, neurological, rare disease and genetic condition organisations to make sure the needs of people living with mito are understood.
Key points
What this means now
- At this stage, we do not expect people with mito to see immediate changes to their current NDIS supports.
- The proposed changes are still being considered by Parliament.
- If the changes become law, they would be introduced over time.
- If you have questions about your own plan, speak with your Local Area Coordinator, support coordinator, planner or another NDIS contact.
Our involvement in the Senate inquiry
A Senate committee is reviewing the proposed NDIS changes.
As part of this process, Mito Foundation contributed to 2 joint submissions:
We contributed to both submissions because mito affects people in ways that overlap with disability, neurological, rare disease and genetic condition communities.
Working with these organisations helps make sure the experiences of people living with mito are heard.
Many of the issues facing people with mito are shared by people living with other complex and lifelong conditions.
By working together, we can help build a stronger case for changes that are fair and work for the people who rely on support.
Thank you to everyone in the mito community who has shared their experiences with us.
Your stories help us explain the real impact of mito and the challenges people can face when trying to access disability support.
They also help us advocate for systems that better reflect the needs of people living with complex and changing conditions.
What we are advocating for
We will keep advocating
We will continue advocating for a support system that:
- recognises the impact of mito
- works for people with lifelong and changing conditions
- protects access to the supports people need
- allows support to change when needs change
- includes accessible services both within and outside the NDIS
- listens to people with disability, families and carers.
We know this is an uncertain time for many people.
Thank you to everyone who has shared their experiences and perspectives with us.
Your stories help us advocate for policies and services that better reflect the realities of living with mito.
We will continue to listen, share updates and speak up for the mito community as these changes progress.
