Getting ready for your planning meeting

Once you’re approved, you become an NDIS participant.

You’ll then have a planning meeting with an NDIS planner. This is where you talk about your goals and the support you need to manage daily life and do more of what matters to you.

Before the meeting, it’s a good idea to revisit the goals you made with your LAC or EC partner.

Take a moment to go over what you prepared earlier:

  • Have your goals changed? What are you working towards now?
  • Are you still using the same supports and services, or have there been any changes?
  • Do you have new challenges or areas where you need more help?
  • Have you got any new reports or documents that show what support you need?

You can bring someone with you to the meeting. If you’d like help to get ready, we’re here for you.

For tips and examples, visit the NDIS setting goals page.

You can learn more about creating your NDIS plan, your plan meeting, support categories and providers by visiting the NDIS Booklets and Factsheets page.

Choosing how to manage your plan

You can choose how your NDIS funding is managed.

In your planning meeting, the NDIS planner will ask how you’d like to manage your plan. It’s a good idea to learn about these options before the meeting so you can decide what works best for you.

There are three ways to manage your plan:

Self-managed

You manage the money and pay providers directly.

Registered plan managed

A registered plan manager helps pay providers and keeps records. You get additional funding in your plan to pay for this.

Agency-managed

The NDIA pays providers for you.

You can also use a mix of these, depending on what works for you.

If you have questions or need support with your plan, contact the NDIS or speak with your LAC or EC. They’re there to help you understand and use your plan.

What happens during your planning meeting

At the meeting, you’ll confirm with your planner, the information you provided to the LAC or EC partner about:

  • your daily life and what support you need
  • your current supports and any gaps
  • your goals and how you’d like to reach them
  • how you want to manage your funding
  • any documents or reports you’ve brought

The planner may come to the meeting with a proposed plan, based on the evidence from your application. You can:

  • ask questions about what’s included
  • explain if your needs or goals have changed
  • request changes to the plan, although changes are not guaranteed
  • ask for a breakdown of the plan, this shows how the funding has been set up and what each part is for

Things to consider:

  • How long will the plan go for?
  • Do you need more or different supports to reach your goals?
  • Is the funding enough to cover the support you need?
  • Do you need help managing your funding or working with providers?
  • Would a support coordinator or plan manager be helpful?

Once the plan is approved. You will get a copy by email or post.

After your planning meeting

After your meeting:

  • carefully check your NDIS plan to make sure it matches your needs
  • our NDIS Navigator can help review your plan with you
  • your planner, LAC or EC partner should contact you to explain your plan

This is called a plan implementation meeting.
