Health professional education modules
Mito Foundation has worked with accredited CPD providers to develop CPD education modules to help health professionals understand, diagnose and treat mitochondrial disease in their patients.

Piecing it together: Maybe it's Mito
This CPD module focuses on the timely identification, appropriate initial management, optimal referral of patients with suspected mitochondrial disease. It also supports GPs to support newly diagnosed patients and carers.
This education is a CPD accredited activity under the RACGP CPD Program and ACRRM PDP Program for the 2023 – 25 triennium. Completing this module will help health professionals:
- identify symptoms and red flags that characterise mitochondrial disease;
- refer patients for timely diagnosis and management;
- understand the GPS roles in the ongoing management of adults with mitochondrial disease;
- design care plans for adults with mitochondrial disease.
Additional resources and information is available below.
Treating mitochondrial disease in primary care: challenges and opportunities
This new self-directed CPD learning module focuses on the post-diagnosis stage of the patient's journey with mitochondrial disease. It is aimed at health professionals who have patients with mito, confirmed or clinically suspected by their specialist. It is worth up to 30 minutes of self reported CPD.
The module includes details on the newly updated Australian Patient Care Standards for mitochondrial disease. Three clinical case studies are also presented to illustrate the differing presentations of mito and how to manage them.
There is a video interview with a specialist that will discuss the role of the health professional in symptom management and supportive therapy. Completing this module will help health professionals:
- understand the Australian Patient Care Standards;
- improve symptom management;
- know when a patient requires baseline testing or extra surveillance; and
- apply preventive measures to mitigate symptoms worsening.
