Equipment Details
The dipstick reader is able to read strips which contain antibodies specific to mitochondrial proteins. By doing so, it is possible to measure the activity of the proteins in cells of suspected mitochondrial disease patients. The machine only takes one hour to complete a reading, a drastic improvement on previous methods. It also doesn’t require overly large samples of cells or tissue.
As well as the reader, the Mito Foundation funded four dipstick assays which measure proteins which could affect mito patients. These proteins include Complex I, Complex IV, PDH and Frataxin. The dipstick assays allow all four proteins to be tested for simultaneously, taking under an hour to process.
This machine was fully funded by the Mito Foundation for the Harry Perkins Institute in May 2014.
