The RISE Project will co-design disability support resources to educate and empower people living with progressive rare diseases and their caregivers.
The resources will address shared challenges in accessing emotional, practical and disability support, especially as their condition worsens and their disability impacts increase.
The RISE Project builds on the lived experiences already shared through our Mito Stories Project.
You told us about the:
- hidden burden of navigating health and disability services,
- barriers to accessing the right care, and the
- need for support that adapts to your changing needs.
We’re working alongside other rare disease organisations to learn from their communities too.
Our commitments
- Strengthen disability support pathways.
- Provide clear guidance for navigating the NDIS and related services.
- Reflect lived experiences through community input.
- Fill gaps by adapting existing resources and creating new ones.
- Share success stories and practical tips.
About the RISE Project
Aims
The RISE project aims to help people navigate the NDIS, making sure support grows as their needs do.
The project will co-design disability support resources to empower people living with progressive rare diseases and their caregivers.
Part of something bigger
Mito Foundation has been funded to complete this project through a Rare Voices Australia (RVA) Partner Project Grant as part of the Rare Disease Disability Project. This work is funded by the Australian Government through the NDIS Peer support and Capacity Building grant, which concludes in October 2026. RVA is the national peak body for Australians living with a rare disease.
Why it matters
People with rare and progressive conditions face unique challenges:
- Their conditions are often not well understood by service providers.
- Disability needs change over time, requiring flexible supports.
- Navigating the NDIS and other systems can be overwhelming without tailored guidance.
Project timeline
The RISE Project runs from September 2025 to October 2026. Each step builds on the last, with input from project partners and the community.
