The United Mitochondrial Disease Foundation (UMDF) has opened applications to their 2020 grant cycle. Applications are welcome from international researchers. Available grants are outlined below.
Postdoctoral Fellow (accelerators)
- This program was launched in 2019 as a new mechanism to marry donor engagement with research grant funding. Applications from Postdoctoral Fellows undergo standard peer review at which time 3-5 finalists are selected. Finalists are provided the opportunity to pitch their research proposal to all attendees at UMDF's Mitochondrial Medicine Symposium, with donors (accelerators) voting to select the prize winner,
- Awards $50,000 USD for up to two years of research.

Early Stage Investigator Prize
- The Early Stage Investigator Prize is targeted to principal investigators still in the first 10 years of independent research (per NIH Early Stage Investigator guidelines) who are interested in exploring a new area of mitochondrial disease research, from basic to translational to clinical.
- Awards $100,000 USD for up to two years.

Experienced Investigator Prize
- The Experienced Investigator Prize is targeted to established principal investigators who are interested in exploring a new area of mitochondrial disease research, from basic to translational to clinical.
- Awards $100,000 USD for up to two years.

Peer review, the hallmark of UMDF’s Research Grant Program for the past twenty years, will remain a critical component of the selection process. The UMDF Scientific and Medical Advisory Board in conjunction with select external experts will assist the foundation in making award selections.
